The Titlis Cliff Walk is a pedestrian bridge located in Mount Titlis, Swiss Alps. It is said to be built around 10,000ft above sea level and is said to be the highest elevated suspension bridge in the European continent.
The structure was designed as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the opening of Engelberg–Gerschnialp railway in January 1913. The Titlis Cliff Walk was officially opened on the 8th of December, 2012.
Engineers took 5 months to construct the bridge which can withstand high wind speeds and snowstorms. The bridge was constructed only during the periods when the weather condition permitted. The cost of constructing the bridge was around 1million pound and it is at a length of 339ft and is just 3ft wide, but it stands around 1,500ft above the glacier. On a clear day, one can witness the Uri Alps and parts of Italy from the bridge.
Speaking about the Bridge, Peter Reinle, from Titlis Cable Cars said: “Everyone was very impressed by the bridge.” He continued saying ‘it opened in a real snowstorm which made it an adventure for everyone who crossed it.’
The bridge can hold around 450 tonnes of snow and the materials used to construct were made of high grade capable of withstanding weights. Media reports suggest that this is one of the ‘World’s Scariest Bridge’ and Switzerland Tourism called it “a high-adrenaline kind of new adventure”.
