Suvarnavathi River is One of the Southern Tributaries of the River Kaveri

Suvarnavathi River is one of the southern tributaries to River Kaveri and a source of irrigation to nearby villages and towns where it flows. It begins in the Nasurghat hills in Mysore and converges to River Kaveri and covers a distance of 88 km.

One of the southern tributaries to River Kaveri, Suvarnavathi River originates at Nasurghat hills, Mysore and covers a distance of 88kms before converging with the Kaveri River. 

The river is formed when 2 streams Niredurgihalla and Araikaduhalla join the river at Badibadga. Before its confluence with River Kaveri, the Suvarnavathi River is joined by Chikkahole and Yenehole tributaries. These locations are touristic spots and a day-trip from Mysore.

Suvarnavathi Dam and Reservoir


In 1997, with a cost of 299.60 lakhs INR, Suvarnavathi Dam was constructed near Attugulipura village, Chamarajanagara Taluk, Karnataka. The dam is adjacent to Chamarajangara to Coimbatore National Highway 948 and is one of the tourist attraction places nearby Mysore and Chamarajangara.

The Suvarnavathi Reservoir is a twin reservoir sharing with the Chikkahole reservoir. Suvarnavathi Reservoir has a storage capacity of 1258.78 cm. The length of the dam is 1,170 m and the height of the dam is 25 m. It is the major source of drinking water for nearby forests and Fisheries and horticulture are the main occupation of this area.

Suvarnavathi River is a major source of irrigation for nearby villages. The main water source for the dam is from the rain in the Punanjanur forest area and it will be full during the rainy season and dry during the summers.
